“The Spirit of Canberra Awards celebrate and acknowledge those driving positive change in our community — recognising the efforts that enhance Canberra’s social, economic, environmental, and cultural wellbeing.’
Jarrett’s recognition as a finalist in the Lifeline Canberra Spirit of Resilience category honours a young man whose courage, compassion, and unwavering dedication illuminate the lives of children and families confronting the devastating reality of brain cancer. Having just turned eighteen and in Year 12, Jarrett endured the unimaginable loss of his beloved little sister, Dainere. In the face of grief so profound it might have broken him, he chose instead to transform his sorrow into purpose, devoting himself to her enduring legacy through Dainere’s Rainbow. The charity has raised over three quarters of a million dollars, with every dollar directed to pioneering research projects and programs that advance Dainere’s vision of a future in which no child suffers so severely from brain cancer and where a cure becomes reality.
Jarrett’s work is guided by a deep understanding of the profound silence that too often surrounds childhood brain cancer and paediatric palliative care. These realities remain confronting, overlooked, and shrouded in societal discomfort, yet he speaks about them with courage, clarity, and conviction. Through his leadership of programs and initiatives, his tireless fundraising, including over $113,000 personally raised through City2Surf, and his advocacy in educational and public forums, Jarrett ensures that children, their parents, and their siblings are not only seen and supported but also heard and understood.
Jarrett embodies resilience at its most extraordinary. His compassion, determination, and unwavering vision have transformed personal tragedy into a source of hope, empowerment, and tangible change for countless families. You can honour his remarkable work by voting for him for the People’s Choice Award before 7 October. The awards ceremony will take place on 16 October, and your support will ensure that his extraordinary contributions are recognised and celebrated.
