Dainere’s Rainbow is deeply honoured to acknowledge a most generous and heartfelt contribution arising from an afternoon of music, offered in the true spirit of community and compassion.
On Saturday, 11 April, within the historic and intimate surrounds of the Gunning Court House, the Barada Flute Quartet, together with their esteemed musical colleagues, presented a chamber performance of rare warmth and authenticity. Facilitated by the Gunning Focus Group, the concert brought together 33 attendees who were invited not only to listen, but to share in a genuine connection with the performers and the music itself.
The program, featuring works by Mozart, Haydn and Ries, was rendered with sensitivity and devotion, reflecting the composers’ original intent that such pieces be experienced in close, personal settings by skilled and passionate musicians. This intent was realised in full, with audience members expressing their delight in glowing terms including “absolutely fabulous,” “delightful,” and “I loved every minute of it,” a testament to the atmosphere so thoughtfully created.
The quartet, John Smiles on flute, Valerie Jackson on violin, Paul Whitbread on viola, who also offered insightful commentary, and Jane Smith on cello, have played together for over 15 years, united by a shared love of chamber music. This occasion marked their premiere public performance, making the afternoon all the more significant.
In an act of profound generosity and humility, the ensemble chose to donate the proceeds of their performance to Dainere’s Rainbow. A remarkable sum of $979 was raised, a gift that will contribute directly to vital Australian research into childhood brain cancer and to the support of families navigating its unimaginable challenges.
This offering was never sought for recognition, yet it stands as a powerful reflection of what can be achieved when artistry and altruism meet.
